About the movie
Stromboli (Italian: Stromboli, terra di Dio) is a 1950 Italian-American drama film directed by Roberto Rossellini and starring Ingrid Bergman. Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, it follows Karin, a displaced Lithuanian refugee who is stuck in an Italian internment camp and, desperate to escape, marries Antonio, a simple fisherman from the island of Stromboli even though she does not love him.
Antonio brings her to his isolated home village on the barren volcanic island between Italy and Sicily, where steep cliffs, a smoking volcano, and a conservative fishing community make life far harsher than she imagined. Struggling with poverty, language barriers, gossiping villagers, and her own restless nature, Karin grows increasingly alienated and trapped, culminating in a crisis of faith and identity as the volcano erupts and she attempts to flee across the island’s hostile landscape.
