Asteroid City is a 2023 American science fiction comedy-drama film written, directed, and produced by Wes Anderson from a story by Anderson and Roman Coppola. Set in a stylised 1955 desert town built around a meteor crater and an astronomy convention for “Junior Stargazers,” the film follows war photographer Augie Steenbeck, his gifted son Woodrow, and a colourful group of parents, children, and officials whose lives are upended when a UFO appears and an alien briefly steals the town’s famous meteorite.
The story unfolds in multiple layers as both a television program about the making of a play and the play itself, blending deadpan humour, existential crises, and meticulous production design. Featuring an ensemble cast led by Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, and many others, the film explores grief, creativity, and the absurdity of trying to understand events beyond human control.
